BHAS Monthly Speaker Series – Red Knots/Joe Buchanan

Six subspecies of Red Knots are known globally. One of these, Calidris canutus roselaari, is found along the Washington coast while migrating between overwintering areas primarily in coastal northwestern Mexico and breeding areas in northwestern Alaska and Russia. This subspecies is a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Alaska and Washington and was listed in the Immediate Management Action category by the U.S. Shorebird Conservation Plan Partnership in 2015. Investigations throughout much of the range of C. c. roselaari in the last decade have revealed high connectivity among key stopover sites between wintering and breeding areas, chief among them Grays Harbor, Washington and Copper River Delta, Alaska. Natural Resource Scientist Joe Buchanan will provide an update of our current knowledge about the roselaari subspecies and prospects for effective conservation planning.

Joe Buchanan is a Natural Resource Scientist with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife; he works in the Conservation Assessment Section of the Wildlife Diversity Division. Joe has a B.S. from The Evergreen State College (1981) and a M.S. in Wildlife Science from the University of Washington (1991).

BHAS speaker series is held on the second Thursday of each month (except March, June, July, and August) at the Temple Beth Hatfiloh (corner of 8th and Washington in downtown Olympia, a block west of Timberland Library). Arrive at 7 p.m. to socialize; programs begin promptly at 7:30 pm.
