Join us for a volunteer training on May 15 from 10-1 on Zoom! Learn about the Pigeon Guillemot (PIGU), our locally breeding seabird, and how to conduct PIGU surveys. Pigeon Guillemots are a Vital Sign Species with the Puget Sound Partnership, and their population trends can reflect the health of the Salish Sea.
The 2021 season of Pigeon Guillemot Breeding Survey runs from June through August. Volunteers spend one hour a week counting Pigeon Guillemots (PIGU) and documenting deliveries of fish to chicks in burrows. Colonies are located from Ketron and Anderson Island to Totten Inlet and Harstine Island, along Nisqually Reach, and in Budd and Eld Inlets. Substitute or part-time volunteers are especially needed this season.
The Pigeon Guillemot Survey in South Sound is sponsored by Nisqually Reach Nature Center.
For more information, email Terence Lee (terencelee@nullnisquallyestuary.org) or Anne Mills (millsa804@nullgmail.com) to register for the training or find out more about the survey program.
