If you haven’t seen the new notice near the bottom of our web page, we want to let you know that Black Hills Audubon is offering a free new service. We have created, and are daily monitoring, a new email address: questionsforBHAS@nullgmail.com. It is geared to novice and new-ish birders who feel a little lost. Perhaps they want to know the identity of that pretty bird they saw on a neighborhood walk. Or perhaps they want to start feeding birds this fall, but don’t know how to best go about it. Maybe they are thinking about putting in some new bushes and want to know which kinds are good for birds. Maybe they want to put up a birdhouse, or learn where good local spot are to see birds. Whatever their question, no matter how basic, we are happy to try and help. We know that more experienced birders, and those familiar with the BHAS or National Audubon web pages, can probably find answer to questions like these by themselves. But beginners don’t know about eBird or the Plants for Birds initiative or how to find online bird field guides and they don’t normally visit our web page – and so we sought out a way to reach them.
Please help us spread the word about this new email hotline. Our understanding is that many individuals have developed a new interest in birding during the COVID-19 crisis. It is a great way to stay connected with nature even when you aren’t straying far from home! We would like to nurture these “fledgling” interests because the more people who enjoy birding, the more advocates for natural space and bird-friendly practices there will be. Once again, the email address is : questionsforBHAS@nullgmail.com.
