Consumers are becoming increasingly concerned about the lives of animals raised for food. Food producers have responded by marketing products with animal welfare claims. However, many of these product labels are misleading. Sheila Rodriguez will address the law behind these claims, focusing on shell eggs. She will also discuss where to find more humanely raised food and which cosmetics are not tested on animals.
Other topics include dogs in public places, and donating to national nonprofit animal welfare and animal rights organizations.

Sheila Rodriguez is a Member at Large on the Board of Black Hills Audubon Society.
Her professional experience includes over a decade in the field of animal welfare. Prior to retiring in Olympia, she taught and published in Animal Law at Rutgers – Camden School of Law.
While at Rutgers, she served, for four years, on the University of Pennsylvania’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, which oversees all research, education, and training involving Penn’s animals. This position involved inspecting all species raised for food.
She also served on the Executive Committee of the Association of American Law Schools’ section on Animal Law.
Prior to her academic career, she represented the Animal Protection Institute, now Born Free USA. As counsel for API, she testified before Congress on behalf of wild horses and represented the organization in federal court.
She holds a B.A. and an M.A. from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and a J.D. from SUNY Buffalo School of Law.
