2023 LEWIS COUNTY CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT RESULTS
The Lewis County CBC took place on December 23rd. There were 35 participants – the most ever – who joined in the field and at feeders. Thank you to all of those folks.
We were very happy to not have any rain on the day, the first time that has happened, though dense fog in patches made visibility a challenge at times. The count ended with 109 species, a record for the Lewis CBC (the prior record was in 2021 with 107 species). We have also added four new birds for our CBC: Cinnamon Teal, Northern Pygmy Owl, Red-shouldered Hawk, and Palm Warbler (which is likely a first county record). There were also many high counts, including Great Egret (3, previous high count: 1), Merlin (6, previous: 1), Steller’s Jay (216, previous: 133), White-throated Sparrow (5, previous: 4), and Lesser Goldfinch (16, previous: 4).
Thanks to those who were able to make it to the compilation dinner; it was a lot of fun to meet folks in person. We used a laptop to include those who wanted to attend by Zoom.
