South County Bird Binge
May 19, 2018 @ 6:30 am-2:00 pm
This trip is for hard-core birders with ambition and stamina. Southern Thurston County has several marvelous birding hotspots, a variety of habitats, which Paul Hicks knows intimately. The trip will visit a variety of locations in South County in a quest to find 70+ species. Expect plenty of “action,” as migration will be in full swing and birds in full song. Tireless, hardcore birders who like a faster pace and a “more-the-merrier” approach to one’s day list will have a blast. Special emphasis will be placed on passerines and birdsong. Previous years’ highlights: Hermit Warbler, Lazuli Bunting, Bank Swallow, Ruffed Grouse, Whimbrel, even an after-hours White-tailed Kite. (80 species were encountered last May.)
Dress for the weather and bring a hands-free pack for water, food, field guide, phone, etc. Please note that bathroom facilities will be few if any. Group size limited to 12. Call or text Paul Hicks at 360-870-3819 for reservations. Meet at 475 Sussex Ave. W. on the main drag near Tenino High School. Participants will be able to head home at any time. If the weather is rotten, call Paul after 5:45am to check for cancellation. Meet at 475 Sussex Avenue West on the main drag near Tenino High School.
