Kennedy Creek

January 11, 2020 @ 10:00 am-12:00 pm

It’s easy to speed by on Route 101 and miss the rich waterfowl birding at the Kennedy Creek estuary, at the far end of Totten Inlet.  But take the time, especially if you have never before, to enjoy the comfortable DNR viewing site back away from the highway, to watch the flocks of different birds wheel in to feed and rest, or to see them flush when a Peregrine Falcon or Bald Eagle threatens.  See shorebirds, raptors, and diverse waterfowl and learn about the native salmon run at this visit.  There is a short, well-graded path to the site but no restrooms.   Two spotting scopes will be on site; still, bring one if you have one.  Dress for the weather.

Directions:  The Department of Natural Resources Kennedy Creek Estuary interpretive site is located midway between Olympia and Shelton just off Route 101.  Phone map apps can have difficulty with this location.

From Olympia, it is about 4.5 miles past the US 101 (Shelton/Port Angeles) and SR-8 (Aberdeen) split.  Go toward Shelton/Port Angeles and turn right from US 101 at SE Old Olympia Highway.

From Shelton, the site is a left turn from US 101 about 3.5 miles past the SR-8 (McCleary AKA Little Creek Casino) exit.

There is parking at the trailhead a short way up Old Olympic Highway on the right.  There is also parking at the intersection of US 101 and Old Olympic Highway, which requires a .2 walk to the trailhead.  Discover Pass required.
