Kate Kendall – The Secret Life of Bears: What trail cameras and genetic analysis of hair have revealed

Bears, by their solitary nature and the remote habitats they occupy, have long been challenging to study. Trail camera footage and genetic analysis of bear hair are providing fascinating windows into bear behavior and population status. Join Kate as she shares what she has discovered about grizzly bears and black bears in the Glacier National Park – Bob Marshall Wilderness Ecosystem. Learn if bears really do rub in the woods and meet the Genghis Khan of grizzlies.
Kate Kendall has spent her career studying grizzly bear and black bear ecology as a research scientist for the US Geological Survey and the National Park Service. After working in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem as a member of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team, she went on to lead projects investigating grizzly and black bear populations in the northwest Montana and Cabinet/Yaak Mountains in Northern Idaho. Noninvasive sampling and molecular tools to monitor bear population abundance, trend, and genetic structure are a particular focus of her work.
