CANCELLED – Field Trip to Mima Mounds

March 23 @ 9:00 am-11:00 am

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Date and Time: Saturday, March 23, 2024, 9 to 11 AM        EVENT CANCELLED – PARK CLOSED DUE TO VANDALISM
Leader: Kyle Leader

Description and Targets: This will be a beginner-friendly outing. We will be looking for winter songbirds and raptors.

Meeting place: Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve, 12315 Waddell Creek Rd SW, Thurston County. From southbound or northbound Interstate 5, take Exit 95 and turn west on Highway 121 (Maytown Road SW) toward Littlerock. In Littlerock, continue west (forward past the school, past the intersection with Littlerock Road that curves south, and past the mini mart/gas station on the right) onto 128th Avenue. Travel about 0.8 miles where 128th Avenue ends at a ‘T’ on top of the hill. Turn right onto Waddell Creek Road and travel about 1 mile. The entrance to Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve will be on the left.

A Washington State Discover Pass is required for parking at this site. This funding helps DNR manage these important natural areas across the state.

Trail information: The trails are relatively flat. Most of the trail is covered with gravel. Our outing will take us through open prairie grasslands and forested habitat.

Bathroom: There is a bathroom by the parking area.

Bring: Binoculars and a field guide if you want one. Merlin Bird ID is a great phone app for identifying birds. I also suggest a hands-free pack for water, snacks, and personal items.

Dress for the conditions and for a slow walking pace; dull natural fabrics are more bird-friendly than bright synthetics. Layers are your friend!
