BIRDING OPEN HOUSE IN SOUTH PUGET SOUND
SATURDAY MARCH 25, 11 AM TO 1 PM
The Kennedy Creek estuary, located at the end of Totten Inlet between Olympia and Shelton, boasts some of the highest concentrations of wintering waterfowl and shorebirds in the far south of Puget Sound. Hundreds of Dunlin spend the winter months here and the estuary is also home to one of the largest concentrations of wintering Black-bellied Plovers in the region, as well as other shorebirds, waterfowl, raptors and passerines. Kennedy Creek supports a healthy Chum Salmon run each November, which nourishes this natural gem. More than 140 species of birds have been observed here.
The Kennedy Creek Natural Area Preserve, managed by the Washington DNR, is the focus of efforts coordinated by Audubon to identify the conservation and protection needs of this Important Bird Area. To raise awareness of the area’s importance to wintering birds, Audubon Washington and Black Hills Audubon are hosting Birding Open Houses. We invite you to join us at our next Open House on March 25 at Kennedy Creek, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., which will coincide with the best tides for observing shorebirds. Come, enjoy the birds, and learn more about this important area in South Puget Sound.
