Birding at Scatter Creek
May 7, 2023 @ 8:30 am-11:00 am
Sunday, May 7
8:30 am – 11 am
Leader: Grace Thornton
Join us for a morning of birding at Scatter Creek Wildlife Area transect 3 – North Unit. Meet at 8:30 am at the main parking area on Case Rd SW, Rochester, WA. A Discovery Pass is required for parking.
Early May is a great time to see our summer migrants. Expect to see warblers, flycatchers, sparrows and purple martins. We’ll meet at the main parking area of the North Unit. There is a pit toilet available and plenty of parking.
We will start our walk in the prairie grasslands south towards the oak scrub along Scatter Creek. There is a service road that is pretty flat and wide, with small rises and divots. It’s a mix of habitats and we will try to take small jaunts off the main path to look for birds in the thicket.
At the end of the walk we will have clear open views of the creek and perhaps see a few water birds. This will be an out and back walk, approximately 2.5 miles.
Dress for the weather, wear good walking shoes, and be prepared for some uneven terrain and the potential for insects or sun on a warm day. Bring water, binoculars, spotting scope if you have one, camera and bird guides if you desire.
Registration is not required.
BHAS has loaner binoculars and a spotting scope for our field trips. If you wish to borrow a pair, please contact us at 4info@nullblackhills-audubon.org a few days ahead of the field trip.
