In this day and age, communication with our membership becomes a function of digital media. The good thing about this is that it doesn’t require much in the way of resources. The challenging thing about this is keeping abreast of all the ways this can happen. As you know, the technology industry is constantly changing and evolving.
The Black Hills Audubon Communication Committee has a group of wonderful volunteers who handle a variety of formats. Please take a moment to meet them:
We do actually have a dedicated land line (360-352-7299) and general email account (bhas@nullblackhills-audubon.org). Bonnie Wood is the volunteer who handles these incoming inquires. Bonnie has been doing this for years and is able to either answer the inquiry or send it to the appropriate person to handle.
You might have read one of Rachel Hudson’s Echo articles. Rachel is our Echo editor and a talented writer. She gathers submissions from our various contributors, edits them, organizes them and submits them to Bruce Jacobs.
Bruce is not only our BHAS Treasurer but also publishes our newsletter by sending out the mass email you receive and posting the articles onto our website. This involves lots of computer knowledge and attention to detail.
Mark DeLaurier has been administering our Facebook account (https://www.facebook.com/BlackHillsAudubonSociety/) for years and we are so lucky to have his expertise. So many people use Facebook for so many reasons that having a presence there becomes necessary for a non-profit like ours.
Quentin Phillips is an avid photographer and recently offered to set up and administer an Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/blackhills352/) account for us. Quentin also posts any submitted photographs to our website gallery which is really shaping up nicely. Please check it out https://blackhills-audubon.org/bird-gallery/.
Christi McGinley is our newest volunteer. She has the job of making sure all the links and content of our website are functional and up-to-date. It’s kind of tedious but very necessary.
I am Kathleen Snyder, BHAS Secretary and Communications Chair. I spend my time on this committee mainly in two ways – working on the website (on which I am gaining more knowledge weekly) and examining how to increase our digital presence. A suggestion has come to me to have our own YouTube channel. What a wonderful idea! Is there anyone out there who would like to take this project on? We have recordings from our speaker programs, from videos we have made for children, and from some adult education Zoom classes. If you would like to explore this possibility, please contact me. That is our Communications Committee. It is a robust and dedicated group of volunteers and I thank my lucky stars often that they are willing to give to BHAS their time and talent. Photo credit: Black-necked Stilts by Mick Thompson.
