Perhaps it goes without saying, but all Black Hills Audubon Society field trips and other gatherings are cancelled for the remainder of the year. COVID-19 continues to disrupt our lives. The field trips planned for the fall all required carpooling, and that would be unwise.
Please be confident in your own birding skills and enjoy fall birding on your own. After all, there is no group there to judge you! Autumn brings birds migrating south. Many waterfowl spend their winters in the Pacific Northwest, as visitors to Billy Frank Jr. National Wildlife Refuge or Woodard Bay can attest. Practice identifying ducks. There are several other local parks and preserves that can boast profitable birding in any season. Longer expeditions to Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, the Olympic Peninsula or Skagit County would also bring sightings of waterfowl and raptors, among them Snow Geese, Trumpeter Swans, and Bald Eagles.
Feel free to email us with any questions you have about bird identifications or other issues. Thank you as always for your support of Black Hills Audubon Society and its efforts.
