Supervisor: Black Hills Audubon Society (BHAS)
Goal: To continue representing five Thurston County environmental nonprofit groups in the Thurston County Shoreline Master Plan (SMP) update.
Background: Thurston County is currently conducting an update to the Shoreline Master Plan (SMP) code. BHAS sponsored a stakeholder and representative of five Thurston County environmental nonprofit groups* in the update process during 2019. BHAS requires an individual to assume that responsibility under the guidance of the previous stakeholder/representative.
Current timeline:
- Late summer 2020 – Public hearings by the Planning Commission (TCPC), followed by the Board of County Commissioners (BoCC)).
- March 2021 – Draft Ordinance, with final Ordinance adopted by April 2021.
- July 2021 – Department of Ecology review.
- November 2021 – Ecology and County finalize SMP.
Internship work will include:
- The Thurston SMP update Intern will work closely with the current stakeholder/representative to help accomplish several responsibilities in the SMP process.
- Assist with reviewing, editing, and submitting testimony on the SMP draft legislation (code).
- Coordinate with presidents/chairs of the five nonprofit groups on advocacy issues.
- Participate on SMP campaigns, member outreach, and/or SMP events.
- Coordinate and collaborate with the past Stakeholder/Representative.
- Learn about SMA, Dept. of Ecology guidelines, and associated state laws (RCWs) and regulations (WACs).
Qualifications:
- It is important the intern is comfortable working independently and as a team member.
- The successful candidate will possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize.
- The intern must have good speaking abilities and be comfortable with outreach.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and basic office equipment is a must.
- Interest in promoting and increasing activism through social media is a plus.
BHAS is committed to issue-based environmental advocacy. The intern must be confident in their ability to carry out the duties of this role and commit to 18 months of work on this issue
Application:
Describe your relevant experience and abilities, as well as the uniqueness of your qualifications.
Ideally, the intern will be available to work flexible hours (approximately10 hours/week) when needed. It would be helpful for the intern to keep track of hours attending meetings, researching and commenting on SMP issues, and collaborating with partners on this project from about June 19, 2020 to December 30, 2021.
A stipend of $1,000 will be available for this internship in two payments, half in the middle, half at the end.
To Apply: Email resume and cover letter to conservationchair@nullblackhills-audubon.org with the subject line “2020 BHAS SMP Internship.” Applications will be considered on a running basis. The application process will remain open until the position is filled. To be considered for the initial screening, please submit an application on or before June 15, 2020.
*The five environmental groups are BHAS, Sierra Club South Sound, League of Women Voters of Thurston County, Thurston Environmental Voters, and Thurston Climate Action Team.
