To protect prairie habitat including nesting areas for avian species, Black Hills Audubon will participate in the Thurston County HCP, which covers the county’s prairie habitat and allows for local (as opposed to state or federal) management of permits for activities that might harm ESA-listed species (e.g., Mazama pocket gopher, Streaked Horned Lark, Harris’s Checkerspot butterfly).
