Field Trip to Inspiring Kids Preserve

May 21, 2022 @ 8:30 am-11:30 am

Saturday, May 21, 2022 Time: 8:30 am – 11:30 am

Leaders: Mary Birchem and Anders Price

Location: Inspiring Kids Preserve (Johnson Point Rd NE). Driving directions will be sent upon registration. This preserve is not yet normally open to the public, so the entrance is a simple yellow gate with no permanent signage. Look for a white Capitol Land Trust event sign. Free parking is available at the site.

Description:

Inspiring Kids Preserve is a 108-acre preserve conserved by Capitol Land Trust along the eastern shore of Henderson Inlet. It conserves shoreline, forest, and wetland habitat and is the site of local outdoor education initiatives and restoration projects. This will be a beginner-friendly outing. We will be looking and listening for spring migrants.

This outing is cohosted by Capitol Land Trust. Please sign up for this outing on their website: https://capitollandtrust.org/inspiring-kids-preserve-bird-outing/

We will meet at the parking area and walk about 2 miles.

Trail information:

The trails are a mixture between dirt, grass, and gravel and are uneven in spots. There is a moderately steep downhill/uphill walk to the parking area. A portion of the trail could be a little soggy/muddy. Some portions of the trail are exposed.

Other information:

There is a portable toilet available and seating available for use about halfway around the trail.

This outing is not wheelchair accessible.

This event is limited to 30 participants because of parking availability. Please carpool if you are comfortable and able to do so.

Bring: Binoculars and a field guide if you want one. Merlin Bird ID is a great phone app for identifying birds. I also suggest a hands-free pack for water, snacks, and personal items.

COVID Guidelines:

  1. Participants agree to follow current Washington Phase Covid-19 guidance. They must stay home if they have a fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle aches, or new loss of taste or smell.
  2. We are unable to accommodate unvaccinated participants.
  3. Use of a facemask is an individual decision.
  4. Participants must agree to these guidelines concerning COVID-19.

Dress for the conditions and for a slow walking pace; dull natural fabrics are more bird-friendly than bright synthetics.

For questions: Mary Birchem, Outreach & Education coordinator at Capitol Land Trust mary@nullcapitollandtrust.org.
