Every Penguin in the World: A Quest to See Them All
Charles Bergman
Program Description
“If we cannot save penguins—cannot save what everybody loves, what can we save?” This is the question at the heart of my talk about penguins—as it is at the heart of my book, published by Sasquatch Press. After a life-changing encounter with a king penguin on South Georgia Island, my wife Susan Mann and I committed to see all 18 species of the world’s penguins in the wild.
We developed a passion for them that took us to some of the most remote and wildly beautiful places on the planet. In a talk that is fact-friendly, story-driven, and full of my own photos, I share what we learned about penguins and how they changed us. Part adventure, part natural history, and part spiritual quest, the talk (and book) are a celebration of the charm and resilience of penguins, as well as a call to action.
About Charles Bergman
A writer, photographer, and speaker, I have been a long-time Professor at Pacific Lutheran University. I am also a long-time member of Tahoma Audubon, and in fact was the first editor of the TAS Newsletter, The Towhee. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and I love living here, in the midst of such natural beauty.
I’ve been a Fulbright Senior Scholar two times, both in Latin America—Mexico and Ecuador. I love speaking Spanish and love the immersion in Latin cultures. I travel extensively around the world. In researching my book on penguins, my wife, Susan Mann, and I traveled to some of the wildest, most distant places on earth.
I write extensively about nature and animals and sustainability. I have many cover stories in magazines like Smithsonian, Audubon, All Animals (U.S. Humane Society), Natural History, BirdWatching, National Geographic and more. I love to put words and images, stories and photos together on behalf of a threatened planet, our fragile and failing Earth. My photos have won a number of awards and contests, including Nature’s Best Photography Awards. My books have won several awards, as well: Washington State Book Award, Southwest Book Award, the Benjamin Franklin Book Award, Independent Booksellers Award, and more. One book was a finalist for a PEN USA Literary Award.
