Skokomish Farms
April 25, 2020 @ 9:00 am-12:00 pm
THIS TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
Skokomish Valley Farms (http://www.skokomishvalleyfarms.com) is located at the foot of the Olympic Mountains in Western Washington. The 735-acre farm is owned by 18 families who work together to provide tasty vegetables and eggs for the local community. Their goal is to be the best possible stewards of the land they farm. To that end, they have 70+ acres in a Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (“CREP”) easement to preserve and restore riparian areas along both the North and South Forks of the Skokomish River. They have enrolled 30+ acres in the Emergency Watershed Protection program (“EWP”) to protect wetland areas in perpetuity. They are also certified-organic by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (“WSDA”), a measure of and commitment to sustainable farming practice. They are also working with the Mason Conservation District on various other conservation and farming projects.
Interesting birds frequent there: Western Bluebirds, Lazuli Buntings, swans, lots of eagles, and many more. It is a truly beautiful spot. Jacob Miller is working hard at chopping out a new birding trail encompassing all of the farm’s hotspots. The resident elk herd might even be on show!
As always, be prepared for any kind of weather and bring binoculars.
To reach the farms, drive north on Highway 101 North past Shelton approximately six miles. About one mile north of the Skokomish River bridge, turn left on Sunnyside Road. Follow Sunnyside Road for three miles to the end (twisty dirt road on the north side of the Skokomish River). Enter Skokomish Valley Farms and follow signs to parking.
For GPS, the farms’ address is Sweetgrass Ln, Shelton, WA. If you have questions or need ore information, contact Mark Biser at mbiser@nullhctc.com.
