Scatter Creek North Unit
June 3, 2018 @ 8:30 am-11:30 am
While the South Unit at Scatter Creek, near Grand Mound, recovers from last summer’s
wildfire, the North Unit is untouched and has the same wildflowers and birds. The creek
along the North Unit runs dry in summer, but there are still oak/ash riparian woodlands to
bird, and conifer forest adjacent. Expect to see Savannah Sparrows, Northern Harriers,
ravens, swallows, Common Yellowthroats, California Scrub-Jays and Western Meadowlarks on the
prairie, and a variety of flycatchers, warblers, vireos, and tanagers in the woodlands.
Assemble with Regina Johnson, Bob Wadsworth, and Mary McCallum in the horse trailer parking area (16810 Case Road, next to the Lucky Eagle Casino billboard) between 8:30 and 9:00 to see if the Bullock’s Oriole is there, then caravan south to the main parking area (17100 Case Road) at 9:00 to walk across the prairie to the
riparian area. The prairie trails are narrow, rough, and rocky so plan on wearing hiking
boots or other sturdy shoes. Bring water and sun protection. The prairie is dry and exposed, unless it’s
raining, when it’s wet and windy. A Discover Pass (or WDFW access pass) is required.
Parking is ample. There is one vault toilet at the main parking area.
