Upper Deschutes Falls and Deschutes Watershed: Birding and Botany
May 7, 2016 @ 8:30 am-4:00 pm
Join us for this rare opportunity to enjoy the special flora and fauna of Upper Deschutes Falls and learn more about the greater Deschutes River Watershed. The Upper Falls is a currently-closed Thurston County park that hosts American Dipper in the fast-flowing water below the falls and features rare plants (especially for Thurston County!), such as Trillium parviflorum, Calypso bulbosa orchids, and uncommon trees and shrubs for Western Washington. Erica will point out the unique plants, Martin will share the history and ecology of the Watershed, and everyone will join in finding spring birds! We’ll make a few stops for birding and lessons from Martin on the way back, and we’ll also provide a little stewardship to this precious resource by pulling Scot’s Broom for a short time during our visit. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy while viewing the falls and birds that fly over the river between the lush forests adjacent to the meadows. Dress for the weather.
Due to the fragile nature of the wet meadows and grassy balds in the park, this trip is limited to 20. We will organize a carpool and send details to all registrants. Registration is required via nativeplantsalvage@nullgmail.com or 360-867-2167. Send questions to Erica at erica@nullnativeplantsalvage.org.
