Climate Change and Birds
March 25, 2015 @ 6:00 pm-8:00 pm
If you are interested in mitigating climate change … SAVE THE DATE!
Must RSVP by 12-midnight
Mon., March 23 to Kim Adelson.
On Wednesday, MARCH 25th, BHAS will be holding a forum at which participants will help both to shape BHAS’ agenda in regards to climate change and to discover steps that they as individuals can take to help reduce its impact.
As you may know, in the Fall of 2014 the National Audubon Society came out with results of a major study which found that within the next 50 years more than half of the 588 species they studied will be greatly, negatively affected by global warming; included in this list are 189 species that live in the state of Washington. (The report is available on their Web page. A link can be found on National Audubon’s website:
http://climate.audubon.org/article/audubon-report-glance).
National Audubon proposes a five-pronged approach to addressing this crisis:
Create bird friendly yards;
Help local Important Bird Areas (IBAs);
Put birds on the community agenda
Meet with decision makers; and
Support policies that lower greenhouse emissions.BHAS members have, of course, been very active in each of these areas for a long time. Come learn about what we are already doing – and perhaps become inspired to join in — and to propose new projects that will help the birds we love in the face of this environmental threat. In light of the alarming evidence gathered by NAS, we are looking for ways that enhance and augment our current efforts, and interested volunteers to help do so.
Time: Wednesday, March 25th, 2015, at 6:00 PM
Location: LOTT’s WET Science Center, 500 Adams Street NE, Olympia, WA
Format: Small group discussions leading to specific proposals for each of
the strategies listed above.
We will be serving pizza, so please RSVP to Kim Adelson, at kgdolgin@nullowu.edu to let us know if you are coming!
Birds are a bell weather for environmental health: if they are at risk, so too are the plants, mammals, insects, etc. that make up our ecosystem and make the Black Hills area so special to live in.
Please come, and help make a difference!
