Seagulls

the color of clouds
in gradations of white
to charcoal

glide like kites
low above us

land among us

strut like lifeguards
sailors, supervisors
landlords of towels
and blankets

finally
accepting us
lift off

their shadows crisscrossing ours
like totems in flight
in early afternoon sunlight.
